Calling card from Alphons von Rothschild probably to Schenker, undated {verso} Götterdämmerung will not appear for a short while yet.2 {recto} With best wishes, [printed:] © Translation Ian Bent, 2008. |
COMMENTARY: FOOTNOTES: 1 Presumably the edition of a piece of music that Alphons was studying. 2 Since Götterdämmerung was given in Vienna as part of the complete Ring cycle in 1879, this must relate to a later performance, if indeed it refers to a performance at all; "erscheinen" can mean "be published"; however, Götterdämmerung was first published in 1877. Possibly, Alphons is referring to a piano reduction of the work, or conceivably to an article about the work. Perhaps, though, he is speaking figuratively.
