Wilhelm Stiassny (1842-1910), Austrian architect, pupil of the Ringstraße architect van der Nüll. Stiassny designed primarily synagogues, houses, especially those for the working classes, and also factories, in Vienna and elsewhere in Austria-Hungary. He was the architect of the Rothschild Hospital in Vienna, built in 1873, and other important buildings by him include the Jewish Hospital for the Blind on the Hohe Warte in Vienna (1872), the Rothschild Hospital in Smyrna (1876), buildings in the Jewish section of the Central Cemetery in Vienna (1878), and the Rothschild family mausoleum (1878). From 1879 onward Stiassny was a member of the board of the Jewish Religious Community (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde), and as such was a signatory to a letter from the Rothschild Artists' Foundation to Schenker (OJ 12/26, [1], November 20, 1899).
